Nuclear Threat

On July 14, 2005, General Zhu Cheng-Hu of China warned that U. S. military interference in a conflict over Taiwan could lead to a Chinese nuclear attack on the U. S. He went on to say that China should be prepared to lose all of their cities east of Xian. Other Chinese generals had given similar threats earlier including nuclear attack on Los Angeles.

What the general said means, "We do not care about the life of our people. If you don't give in to our demand to take over a free democratic country like Taiwan, then we will nuke you regardless of the cost". Then, what will be the next demand? Will we continue to give in?

On March 14, 2005, Chinese Congress unanimously passed its Anti-Secession Law against Taiwan. The law created a legal framework for possible attack on Taiwan when "possibilities for a peaceful re-unification are completely exhausted". Japan gave up the sovereignty of Taiwan in the San Francisco Peace Treaty in 1952. The sovereignty of Taiwan belongs to the people of Taiwan, not China. So, it should be called Annexation Law instead of Anti-Secession Law.

General Zhu's nuclear threat as well as the passage of the Anti-Secession Law in China should be a wake-up call to the world.
